SOTERIA ALLIANCE CORPORATION
"Providing a home, support, and care for adults with developmental disabilities"
Soteria Alliance Corporation is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 to give a better quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Soteria Alliance Corporation opened it's first Adult Residential Facility named "Lighthouse" in July of 2008. The goal and theme of this Corporation is guided by the passage of scripture from the Holy Bible that states:
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy” Proverbs 31:8 - 9
The Corporation's desire is for all those whom they would serve to benefit from a program based around the ideas of helping our residents remain inclusive in their families, while becoming as independent as possible. This exceptional program helps to give our clients hope to achieve their maximum potencial in life and enjoy the camping and outings which our program provides.
The Althof family (owners of Soteria Alliance Corporation) have two sons. Their eldest son is able work and live independently, but requires supported living services. Their youngest son Skyler is diagnosed with Autism. Skyler has lived in an adolescent group home since age 15. In November of 2006 he turned 21 and has "aged out" of the adolescent group home system. He will need to be transferred to an adult facility.
An excerpt from the book that Marlene Althof is currently writing explains how she and her husband Dan came to the resolution that it is imperative to care for the lowliest of our fellow human beings.
"You can't come in here! Stay Out!" I screamed.
Determined to come in, IT shoved the door open. I stumbled back, "GET OUT!" I yelled. Instinctively, IT walked to where the kids were hiding and revealed them. "NO, NO! Don't touch them! Get away from them! Help!"
Disability took my kids out of my house in broad daylight. There was nothing I could do to stop it from happening. They were gone.
The Althof's have been determined to fight for their children ever since. Early on, Dan and Marlene found out how much one has to advocate for their disabled loved one. At almost every turn, there was yet another fence to hurdle. Coming to grips with the fact that both the children were disabled was unbearable. After the initial shock of the diagnosis they had to set their sights on finding out everything they could about the disabilities. Was there a cure? How do they cope? How will this affect their family's future?
The Lighthouse ARF has the look and feel of a home, not something that would feel like a “facility”. The six bedroom home sits on a beautiful 6 acre Avocado ranch in Ramona, California with an additional citris grove, small chichen house, garden, corrals and a pasture.
Through charitable donations each client’s room has been furnished with their own king or queen size beds, and television. There is a computer with internet access so each resident, with the help of our staff, can explore the world electronically and expand their horizons.
This will be the first of what is hoped to be many homes and would be christened Soteria Lighthouse.
Our wonderful Board of Directors, Administrators, and Direct Care staff, are constantly reminded that we are setting an example to the world of not only how our residents should be treated but also the remarkable accomplishments they can achieve with the right support.
